From the time I was promoted to the rank of Specialist 4 (E-4) through the rank of Sergeant First Class (E-7), I performed as a trainer as part of my duties in every assignment I held. It is the duty of every non-commissioned officer to train and mentor their subordinates. In my first three years in the active Army, I was training my subordinates in technical (Air Defense Artillery missile radar systems) and non-technical (individual Soldier and leadership ) skills. For the next five years in the US Army Reserve, it was Infantry, leadership and Soldier skills. At one time I was assigned to a position where training and training development was the primary focus of the position.
As the Intelligence & Operations Non-commissioned Officer, Infantry Team 3, Combat Arms Exercise Division, 85th Division Maneuver Training Command, I was a Staff Sergeant (E-6) and part of a team that designed, developed and implemented various types of exercises for US Army Reserve and US Army National Guard Infantry units. The type of exercises included Field Training Exercises (FTX), Map Maneuver Exercises (MMX), Computer Assisted Map Maneuver Simulations (CAMMS), Staff Exercises (STAFEX), Situational Training Exercises (STX), Command Post Exercises (CPX) and Lane Training Exercises (LTX). These were developed and conducted to train and evaluate Infantry units anywhere from squad level to battalion level. This included individual Soldier skills, as well as training for a unit's command and staff. Additional information can be found in Army Regulation 350–28 Army Exercises.
