I have been called upon to be an instructor, trainer, or mentor starting way back in my high school days. This continued later with instructor duties (either as a primary or additional duty) in the US Army, civilian employers, and volunteer organizations. However, during many of those times not much was given to me in the way of outlines, handouts, presentations, syllabi, or lesson plans and I was left to my own devices to develop them.
Based on feedback, awards and promotions I have received over the years, it appears I am good at it. In addition, I have over 30 years of technical writing experience. Instructional design and technical writing share many of the same processes and skillsets. They both entail effective communication and the skills and challenges are complementary. However not all Instructional Designers could be effective Technical Writers, and vice-versa. I am one who does both effectively.
Originally much of my instructional design training was on-the-job or self-taught. This section of my e-Portfolio contains an electronic collection of items and evidence that shows my journey in the study of instructional design and is a combination of process and product in that pursuit.
