From the time I was commissioned a Second Lieutenant (O-1) until my retirement as a Major (O-4), I performed as a trainer or subject matter expert (in the Air Defense Artillery branch) as part of my duties in every assignment I held. As the Executive Officer of two different units, I formally had the additional duty assignment of Training Officer. I was the company commander for an Armored Cavalry One Station Unit Training (OSUT) company (a unit that took new Soldiers and put them through basic training and advanced Armored Cavalry training). But there were also positions I held that primarily dealt with training and training development.
I was the Umpire/Controller Logistics, and later the Umpire/Controller Opposing Forces (OPFOR), for the Civil Affairs, Psychological Operations, Military Intelligence (CPM) Team, Composite Exercise Division, 85th Division Maneuver Training Command. At this time I was a First Lieutenant (O-2) and part of a team that designed, developed and implemented various types of exercises for US Army Reserve and US Army National Guard Civil Affairs, Psychological Operations, and Military Intelligence units. These exercises trained and evaluated the units in their specific functional areas, individual Soldier skills, as well as training for the unit's command and staff. Additional information can be found in Army Regulation 350–28 Army Exercises.
My last assignment in the US Army Reserve prior to my initial retirement was as the Assistant Combat Arms Controller, Simulation Team 3, Battle Projection Group, 1st Brigade (Battle Command Staff Training), 85th Division (Exercise). I was a Captain (O-3) and part of a team that designed, developed and implemented computer simulation exercises with the Brigade/Battalion Battle Simulation (BBS) system. The BBS model simulates battle at the tactical level of Blue brigade/battalion (BLUFOR) against Red division/regiment (OPFOR). The model is designed as a command-and-control trainer for the brigade and battalion commanders and their staffs.
In 2006, I was recalled out of the Retired Reserve and back to full active duty. I was assigned to the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Capability Manager - Lower Tier office and became part of a team that established the Counter-Rocket Artillery and Mortar (C-RAM) training base at Fort Bliss, Texas. I also assisted in the training of US Army and Navy personnel, and military forces of the United Kingdom on the system. Later I was assigned to the Surfaced Launched Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (SLAMRAAM) program which included coordinating with defense contractors, reviewing and editing technical and tactical manuals, and developing a SLAMRAAM Staff and Planners course for the United States Army Air Defense Artillery School (USAADASCH).
